Wedition and the Environment

by Liz Gatherer

Looking after the world we live in is very important to me, where possible I do what I can. When initially starting Wedition this was an important point that I was worried about, I wanted to be able to have as little negative impact on the environment as possible. One of the first things I did was to make sure I would be using the right printers. I started researching printers in the area, it was paramount that the printer I used would be local.

I needed to be able to be there in person to check on customer orders and be able to deal with any issues that may crop up. I could not belive my luck when I discovered Crown Litho, just 0.8 miles from my home and Wedition HQ. Not only are they so local I can walk or bike there, but they were the first UK print company to use a chemical free plate making system. This eliminates the use of, and need to dispose of, chemical waste. Crown use vegetable-oil based printing inks as standard. Another positive to this is the quality of print always remains to the highest standard as over time, chemicals would degrade the machines and lessen the quality of the print. Crown are fully certified to ISO 14001*.

  • Every Wedition magazine (and all products at Crown) are printed on FSC status paper, all ink used is vegetable-oil based.
  • All Wedition business cards and promotional material are printed on recycled paper.
  • Wedition works with local suppliers actively supporting family-run business, small business and providing business mentorship to local start-ups.

Crown Litho clients include: Greenpeace, Compassion in World Farming, Friends of the Earth, Christian Aid.

To date, Crown have won two sustainable business awards for environmental improvement and innovation.

*ISO 14001

This is an internationally recognised scheme. It provides a framework for environmental awareness, monitoring and continual improvement. The 3 Key areas are:

  • Compliance with environmental regulation
  • Prevention of pollution
  • Improvement in environmental performance FSC (Forestry Stewardship Council) Chain of Custody

By holding the FSC Chain of Custody certification the printer is able to use the FSC trademark on all publications printed on FSC certified or FSC recycled stock. This certificate is about the fibre tracking process only and ensures that there is no contamination between FSC and non-FSC material.

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, non-government organisation dedicated to promoting responsible management of the worlds’ forests.

The FSC has developed a system of forest certification and product labelling that allows consumers to identify wood and wood products from well-managed forests.

The FSC certifies that forests are managed in an environmentally, socially beneficial and economically viable manner.
