Why you should have a pre-wedding shoot

by Liz Gatherer

I'm a big fan of pre-wedding photos, the opportunity to get to know your photographer and be at ease in front of them and their camera doesn't just leave you with some gorgeous couples photos to cherish forever, but also ultimately gives you better wedding day photos due to the fact that you are already comfortable in front of their camera due to the fact you have had some practice!

  • By getting to know your photographer ahead of the day, you will be yourselves in front of the camera.
  • This, in turn will lead to better wedding day photos, because you will already be at ease in front of the camera, you will appear more carefree and relaxed in your wedding day photos.
  • The photographer will likely give you a few tips to make you look even better than you already do, such as lowering a shoulder, turning inwards/outwards slightly, have one foot in front of the other, standing straighter etc.
  • Your guests will see how comfortable you are in front of your photographer (and the camera) so they will be too.
  • If you have the photo shoot at your wedding venue, it will give you an idea on any 'must have' photos you want on the day, and it gives your photographer a chance to check out the venue in terms of lighting and backdrops if they have not shot there before.
  • You'll have some AMAZING photos of the two of you just at the start of your new chapter together.
  • If you choose to have Wedition, a personalised wedding magazine, then you will have an awesome front cover!

Get to know your photographer

Spending time with your photographer on a pre-wedding photo shoot means that you’ll naturally get to know them better as you’ll be chatting to each other and finding out more about one another. By the time your wedding day comes around, you’ll feel as though you are with an old friend… which is just as well, as you will probably spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than anyone else!

Your wedding day photos will be better

Now I’m not saying that your photographer needs the practice and that’s why they’ll be better… having spent some time with your wedding photographer ahead of the big day, you will already be at ease in front of the camera, you will both appear more carefree and relaxed in your wedding day photos which will mean better photos all round.

You’ll pick up some posing tips

The photographer will likely give you a few tips to make you look even better than you already do, such as lowering a shoulder, turning inwards or outwards slightly, have one foot in front of the other, standing straighter.. all these pointers will make a big difference in your overall look as you’ll have a better posture and the tips they give will have a flattering effect to the way you are posing.

Your guests will benefit too!

When your guests see how comfortable you are in front of your photographer (and the camera) and how much fun you are having with them, it will put them at ease too and in turn they will be more relaxed in front of the camera.

Find out your ‘must have’ shots ahead of the day

If you decide to have the photo shoot at your wedding venue, it will give you an idea of any 'must have' photos you want on the day. It will also give your photographer a chance to check out the venue in terms of lighting and backdrops if they have not shot there before. Perhaps together you will come up with a few awesome ideas that you simply must capture on the big day itself.

Front cover worthy

If you choose to have Wedition, a personalised wedding magazine on your wedding day, then you will be spoilt for choice on photos to use for an awesome front cover! Many of our Wedition couples have used one of their pre-wedding photo shoot images for their front cover and their magazines truly look awesome. Couples often include their wedding stationery essentials such as the order of the day, order of service, readings and wedding menu inside their Wedition which actually saves them money as they don’t need to print the stationery with an additional supplier. As well as being cost effective, it’s more environmental friendly as we’ve found that printed stationery often gets thrown away whereas Wedition’s are kept and cherished forever by wedding guests. As well as the stationery, couples will include a who’s who of the wedding party, their proposal story, venue history, games (table quiz, crossword, word search, wedding speech bingo) they often include an in memory of page as well as a wedding day details article, the choices are limitless and bespoke to your wedding desires.
